The Dervaes family lives 15 minutes away from Los Angeles in a suburban area. Their garden measures almost 4000 square feet, which they use to to grow and produce their own food.
They grow 400 different varieties of fruit, vegetables and edible flowers. Taking advantage of all the space available, this family produces more than 2000 kg of vegetables, 400 kg of organic chicken, more than 450 eggs, 12 kg of honey and fruit every year. And it’s all organic. Their goods are considered to be of excellent quality.
In this way, the family manages to go beyond food self-sufficiency, with a production so abundant that it generates an income of around $ 20,000 a year.
All family members lend a hand in growing this vegetable garden. To reduce electricity consumption and expenses, they decided to install photovoltaic panels. So that all agricultural tools are powered by clean energy.
Thanks to its crops, this family always eats whatever is in season. They sell their vegetables locally, mainly to restaurants in the area.
The money they earn from these sales allows the family to purchase those goods that they cannot produce at home.
