Love, in Steiner’s interpretation of the word, does not refer to romance or attraction. It means something much deeper than that. Presence. Engagement. In a word, Attention, the active impetus for human evolution.
This is what we are missing.
Without Love, all our progress and achievements remain stuck in the material, exoteric, mortal stream of life. Nothing we achieve in that subjective temporary state can abide. Material progress, without Love, is a source of imbalance, injustice, and violence.
With unconditional spiritual love comes a creativity capable of transforming consciousness, society, even matter itself, into fertile ground for the development of our immortal spirit.
Progress with Love is the harmonious development of the true essence of every being. The possibility is there, for all of us, like the light of the Sun, shining down on all alike, regardless of status or behaviour.
When we bring Love to everything we do, we become conduits for a greater river of cosmic creativity, ready to be poured into the Earth. When we do this correctly, everything gradually becomes better, more beautiful, more aligned with the Truth.
What daily practice can we follow in order to participate in this process?
To begin with, we must observe ourselves, in life, as we deal with the people and events that we encounter. Over time, we will see our habits and our weakness, and also that our encounters in life are not random but rather indicative of a pathway to personal growth. At this point, we must engage – put simply, we must live our lives, but with Love. With Attention. If we are able, in the moment, to see what is good for someone else and not turn away from it because of laziness or egotistical preferences, we can take the crucial step to adding Love into our life, and the lives of others.
The flow of events, with all the challenges and choices presented to us, is sent to us by the spiritual world, tailor-made for each one of us to give us the opportunity to develop and learn every day by adding something of our own, something actively good and intentional that we wouldn’t do instinctively. We can choose to add one more drop of love. It is the most direct and efficient means by which each of us can really grow and facilitate a truly positive evolution for society.
It will take time, and it will be difficult, but it is possible for us to do a little better, every day, and the end result will surprise you.
