We often read news, usually from the United States, about new portals opening up, cosmic influences affecting our planet, or elevated consciousness available only through a specific technique or guru.
It seems like there is a formula:
- “Something” is about to happen which will cause great changes in the universe and within
ourselves. - “Let go” of excessive attachment to life and earthly existence.
- This portal/cosmic influence/teaching will “change everything”.
The common thread in all these lofty proclamations is that someone or something outside of ourselves is coming to save us and to help us grow as human beings. We are cast as passive recipients, with no active role to play in our own inner evolution. It will just happen.
For many people, this sounds pretty appealing, even comforting. With all our worldly troubles, being saved would be ideal. We’re cast as a victim, drowning in the ocean of the world, flailing our arms for a cosmic lifeguard to rescue us. It might be easier to do it that way, but it’s no way to learn how to swim.
Now that the spiritual world has finally placed us in the condition of relying on ourselves to grow, to put more love and awareness into our daily lives, along comes [INSERT NAME HERE] to “liberate” us from the work we chose to do on Earth.
The arrival of salvation from an external source is a dangerous fiction that tells us “Don’t do anything, don’t attach yourself to life, don’t worry about making any effort” when the only real way we can truly grow is by learning firsthand how to face life.
Predictions of redeeming astral conjunctions, open portals sending us cosmic rays, tipping points like 2000 or 2012, UFOs coming to save our civilization, great dimensional leaps or ascensions – have any of these things actually happened? Isn’t it time to put aside these misleading illusions?
Spirituality is something else entirely. It has to do with our real lives as they unfold, with our personal effort to grow. No one can do it for us. It is work we must do for and on ourselves.
Life surrounds us. It presents us with challenges that require our full engagement, with love and awareness. We must develop awareness as we would develop a muscle, gradually and with increasing effort. This is how awareness grows. There is no cosmic short cut, no guru who can do it for us.
We can’t expect the arrival of something or someone to save us. On a daily basis, our spiritual guides, who have never abandoned us, are trying to point us towards the best path for our evolution. The pain we are told will be taken away by an external saviour is really an ally, indicating the direction for our efforts of self-improvement.
Those who present us with short cuts want to deviate our attention from the only true path to evolution, a path which helps our divine consciousness to grow. It is the reason we came to Earth, to do exactly what are doing. The way is open before us, every day.
We have no need of portals, gurus, hands on heads, strange techniques, arcane formulae, galactic saviours. If anything, these are distractions. We only need actions carried out with greater love and awareness, for all those beings that surround us.
